What Is Acute Care?

Acute care focuses on medical concerns that begin suddenly and need timely evaluation but are not life-threatening emergencies.

During your visit, your provider will review your symptoms, perform an examination, recommend appropriate testing when needed, and develop a treatment plan. Depending on your condition, treatment may include medication, supportive care, follow-up instructions, or referral to a higher level of care.

Conditions We Commonly Evaluate

Our providers can evaluate and treat many common illnesses and minor injuries, including:

Cold, Flu, and Respiratory Symptoms

  • Cold and flu symptoms
  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Sinus pain or congestion
  • Ear pain and ear infections
  • Bronchitis symptoms
  • Mild asthma symptoms
  • COVID-19 symptoms
  • Seasonal allergies

Minor Illnesses

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Mild abdominal discomfort
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Urinary tract infection symptoms
  • Minor skin infections
  • Rashes
  • Pink eye
  • Mild allergic reactions

Minor Injuries

  • Sprains and strains
  • Minor cuts and abrasions
  • Minor burns
  • Insect bites and stings
  • Minor falls
  • Uncomplicated back or muscle pain
  • Possible minor fractures that are stable and do not involve severe deformity

The conditions listed above are examples and do not include every concern we can evaluate. Please call our office when you are uncertain whether your condition is appropriate for a walk-in visit.

Walk-In Availability

Walk-in visits are accepted based on provider availability and the medical needs of patients already in the clinic.

To help us provide safe and timely care:

  • Walk-ins are accepted until one hour before closing.
  • Calling before arrival is strongly encouraged.
  • Patients may be scheduled for a later time if the clinic has reached capacity.
  • Patients with appointments may be seen before walk-in patients.
  • Wait times may vary based on patient volume and the urgency of medical concerns.
  • A walk-in visit does not guarantee that every service, procedure, or test can be completed during the same visit.

Walk-In Visits Are for Acute Concerns

Walk-in appointments are intended for new or suddenly worsening medical concerns.

Chronic conditions generally require a scheduled appointment so your provider has enough time to perform a complete evaluation, review medications and medical history, order appropriate testing, and develop a long-term treatment plan.

Examples of concerns that usually require a scheduled appointment include:

  • Diabetes management
  • High blood pressure management
  • Thyroid conditions
  • Medication management
  • Ongoing anxiety or depression treatment
  • Chronic pain
  • Long-term weight-management care
  • Routine follow-up appointments
  • Annual physicals and wellness visits
  • Completing extensive paperwork or disability forms

A sudden change in a chronic condition may still need urgent evaluation. Please call the office so our staff can help determine the most appropriate next step.

When to Call 911 or Go to the Emergency Room

New Mexico Family Medicine is not an emergency department. Some symptoms require immediate emergency care and should not be evaluated through a routine walk-in visit.

Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department for symptoms such as:

  • Chest pain or pressure
  • Signs of a heart attack
  • Severe shortness of breath
  • Signs of a stroke, including facial drooping, weakness, confusion, or difficulty speaking
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Seizure
  • Severe allergic reaction
  • Uncontrolled bleeding
  • Severe burns
  • Major trauma or injury
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Sudden or severe headache
  • Serious head injury
  • Severe dehydration
  • Suicidal thoughts or an immediate mental health crisis
  • Any condition that appears life-threatening

Do not drive yourself to the clinic or emergency department when you believe you may be experiencing a life-threatening emergency. Call 911.

What to Bring to Your Visit

Please bring the following items whenever possible:

  • Photo identification
  • Current insurance card
  • A list of your medications and supplements
  • A list of medication allergies
  • Relevant medical records or recent test results
  • Payment for any applicable copay, deductible, or self-pay fee
  • A parent or legal guardian for patients younger than 18, unless prior arrangements have been made

New patients may be asked to complete registration and medical-history forms before being evaluated.

Testing and Treatment

Depending on your symptoms and the services available that day, your provider may recommend:

  • Rapid illness testing
  • Urine testing
  • Laboratory work
  • Prescription medication
  • Over-the-counter treatment recommendations
  • Wound care
  • Supportive home care
  • Follow-up with your primary care provider
  • Referral to urgent care, a specialist, or the emergency department

Testing and treatment are based on your symptoms, examination findings, medical history, and your provider’s clinical judgment. Antibiotics are prescribed only when medically appropriate.

Pediatric Walk-In Care

We evaluate many common childhood illnesses and minor injuries. Children must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian, or an adult who has appropriate authorization to consent to treatment.

Please call before arriving with:

  • Infants younger than three months with a fever
  • Children experiencing breathing difficulty
  • Significant dehydration
  • Severe pain
  • Serious injuries
  • Symptoms that are rapidly worsening

Our staff may recommend emergency care when a child’s symptoms require a higher level of evaluation or monitoring.

Insurance and Self-Pay

New Mexico Family Medicine accepts many major insurance plans. Coverage and patient responsibility vary by insurance plan, so we recommend contacting your insurance company to confirm your benefits.

Copays, deductibles, coinsurance, and charges for services not covered by insurance are the patient’s responsibility.

Self-pay options are also available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an appointment for acute care?

Walk-ins are welcome based on provider availability. However, calling before arriving can help us confirm whether we have availability and whether your concern is appropriate for the clinic.

How long will I have to wait?

Wait times depend on the number of scheduled patients, walk-in volume, provider availability, and the urgency of each patient’s medical needs. We will make every reasonable effort to see you as quickly as possible.

Are walk-ins accepted until closing?

Walk-ins are generally accepted until one hour before the clinic closes. We may stop accepting walk-ins earlier if the clinic has reached capacity.

Can I use a walk-in visit for medication refills?

Routine medication refills and ongoing medication management usually require a scheduled appointment. Certain medications may require laboratory testing, monitoring, an examination, or a controlled-substance agreement before they can be prescribed or refilled.

Can I receive antibiotics during a walk-in visit?

Antibiotics are prescribed only when your provider determines that they are medically appropriate. Many respiratory illnesses are caused by viruses and do not improve with antibiotics.

Can you treat chronic conditions during a walk-in visit?

Walk-in visits are intended for acute concerns. Chronic conditions generally require a scheduled appointment to allow enough time for a complete evaluation and treatment plan.

What happens if my condition is more serious than expected?

Your provider may recommend immediate evaluation at an emergency department or another facility when your condition requires testing, imaging, treatment, or monitoring that is not available in our clinic.
